My title

Here is one of our earliest crowdfunding videos we made for Kickstarter, but could have easily been made for Indiegogo or Wefunder.  This company, Railyard Studios, wanted to take 100+ year old railroad rail and ties and turn them in to an iPad stand.  Pretty cool idea really.  Now they are making way more than iPad stand.  They have moved on to beds and wine racks and so much more.  Check out their website here and watch their Kickstarter video below.  Need a crowdfunding video made your your company?  Give us a call: info@WeMakeVideos.com

Crowdfunding Video Script:

Hi we’re Robert and Rob from Rail Yard Studios. We’re on Kickstarter to gear up to make these iPad holders from railroad steel and rescued virgin crossties. Our first model is this one that is steel and wood. We have plans for one that is rail only that we will take from paper to reality.

For the past year, we’ve been making custom furniture from these same materials. The steel is scrap rail bearing the names of the foundries and the dates it was rolled.

The dates go back into the early 1900’s and even the 1800s with names like Carnegie and Tennessee appearing on the sides. Some of it came from Germany like this one. It has the month and year it was produced on it. The month is written in German as M-A-I instead of the English spelling of M-A-Y.

Since the dye for the brand had to be cut in reverse and it was often done by hand, we have some pieces where the letters and numbers are reversed like here where the 70 is written 07 and the letter S and the number 4 is backwards on this piece.

Each piece tells a great story. The head of a new rail looks like this, but the steel we use has been worn by the wheels of locomotives and the cars they were pulling. The head of the rail shows signs of “flow” which is this little lip that is created by trains running over the rail for a century. Flow varies depending on lots of factors. The ends of rails may get more heavily battered since there is more give in the joints. Rail that came from a curve may have a more pronounced lip of flow since the pressures were greater on it. Some of the pieces reveal manufacturing flaws or signs of extreme wear like this vertical split head.

We combine the steel with crossties that have never been treated.

The ties we use were singled out as seconds at the tie plant and were going to burned in the tie plant furnace because they did not make grade. They posses great imperfections like knots and bark seams that we then incorporate into the design.

Even the sizes vary as you can see looking across our raw stock.

They’ve never been treated with creosote so they are pure virgin wood.

Crossties are made exclusively with center cut hardwoods, so you can see the heart of the tree in every piece. We call this table Derailment with all of the ties going at different angles.

Here’s the heart of the tree I was talking about. And this piece is nice because it shows some of the diversity of species we get. It has red oak, white oak, black locust, hickory, and a little piece of beech hidden under here.

The markings in the sides are incisor marks where the outer portion of the timber was punctured to better allow the creosote to soak in. But our ties got yanked from the process just before that step. Treating them would have been a waste of money for the tie company because they couldn’t sell them. It means we are able to offer a more sustainable product by using their castoffs.

Because the rails and ties are so individually different and they vary so much from one piece to the next, we have to design to accommodate those variances and we have to be prepared as we construct to adjust for those unique features. As we’ve done here in this Wedge Wine Rack.

We catalog all the details about each piece including the brands on the rails, the color we stain the piece and the wood species. Here is one of our Triangle Coffee Tables in hickory stained with a couple of different colors – one a natural finish and the other with a darker brown stain.

Then we individually number each one with a railroad tie date nail. Up until the 1970’s ties were dated with the year they were produced. We get these nails scavenged from old tracks and use them to uniquely identify each piece we create.

We’ve loved creating the idea and building the furniture, and we’re going to keep doing that. But we’ve realized that not everyone can afford a custom built piece of furniture. On top of that, we’ve had lots of ideas for more consumer-oriented products like these iPad holders. While some of the equipment we need in order to branch out into the new products is the same, we need some additional pieces of machinery.

So that’s why we’ve come to kickstarter. We want to raise enough money to buy a sandblaster. If you go really crazy, maybe we’ll even go out and get a plasma cutter or water jet.
